East Hants 7 VML 5

2018-11-19

The Peruzza boys could not be kept in check despite many efforts by the Valley Maple Leafs Sunday afternoon at Hants Exhibition Arena in Windsor.  Matthew Peruzza took over the league scoring lead with his 6 point afternoon as he scored four goals and added 2 assists in the Penguins 7-5 win over the Leafs.  Adam Peruzza meanwhile scored once and assisted on five others.  Derek Boudreault scored twice and added three assists for the Penguins.  Adam Peruzza scored his only goal 34 seconds into the game as he split the Valley defence and let a high wrist shot go which beat James Brenton high on the right side.  The Penguins went up 2-0 6:47 into the game as Adam Peruzza skated past a Leaf defenceman and slid it to Matt Peruzza.  The Leafs got to within one later in the first period as Mitchell Singer was positioned on the point after the Leafs won the face-off and he let a shot go from the point which beat Penguins net minder Ryan Huestis to his left side.

Matt Peruzza scored his second of the game for the Pens 1:05 into the second period but the Leafs John Chambers displaying some gritty checking in front of the Pens net made it 3-2.  The Leafs were a vastly improved team in the second period but missed an excellent scoring chance with four skaters all over the East Hants net and Huestis down but they simply could not buy a goal.  Cody Burghardt was going in alone but a great poke-check from the Pens' Daniel Davidson knocked the puck from Burghardt’s stick.  With 3:56 to play in the second and heavy traffic all around the Pens net making it doubtful Huestis could even see the puck, John Chambers tied it for the Leafs at 3-3.  The tie did not last long as the Pens hit a goalpost and the puck came right back to Boudreault who snapped a wrist shot to Brenton’s left side with 1:41 to go in the middle period.

The Pens began the third period on the power-play for the opening 1:16 and they zeroed in keeping the Leafs bottled up in their own end for the entire 1:16 of the power-play but could not find a good scoring chance.  Then with only three minutes having been played in the third, Adam Peruzza sent a pass from behind the Leafs net onto the stick of Matt and it was 5-3 Pens.  Matt Peruzza continued his torrid afternoon making it 6-3 with a shot from 20 feet out.  The Leafs after looking up in the second struggled again in the third and ended up playing short-handed for five minutes, however, with 1:31 left in the Pens power-play, the gentleman who seemingly has a vision stretching beyond other players - Ethan Rendell-Watson scored his fifth short-handed goal and 14th marker of the season on a breakaway to pull the Leafs to within 6-4.  Seconds later, the Pens went up 7-4 on a goal from Derek Boudreault.  Then 13 seconds later, sloppy play by the East Hants defense allowed the Leafs their fifth goal of the afternoon by Manny Manero and that concluded the game’s scoring to make the final 7-5 East Hants.  The Pens took a minor penalty with 2:03 remaining in regulation but the Leafs could not get another goal.
