The Valley Maple Leafs did not waste anytime in taking the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles out of the game Friday, October 19th during the Leafs’s home opener. The Eagles started off well, but could not sustain any kind of offensive threat. The Eagles managed to get the first two good scoring chances of the season, in Windsor, but it did not last long as John Chambers scored the first of his three for the night as Eagles' netminder Levi Denny did everything humanly possible to keep the puck out of the net as the Leafs swarmed like bees. Chambers finally put it behind Denny as the Eagles' goaltender was making one last attempt to fall on the puck. Ben Dixon of the Leafs was then sent to the penalty box for kneeing but that didn’t stop the Leafs, as Ethan Rendell-Watson scored the first of his three for the night on a clear-cut breakaway, short-handed. With the score at 2-0, Eagles' defenceman Landon Gould let a bullet go from the blue line only to hit the goal post. The Leafs made it 3-0 with fierce determination around the Eagles' net once again as team scoring leader, and captain, Cody Burghardt tallied his fourth of the season to go along with 11 assists for 15 points scored. The Leafs made exceptionally few mistakes Friday night, the most obvious one was when Patrick Halpin, in an attempt to pass the puck out of the Leafs defensive zone, put the puck right on Trent Alexander Reardon’s stick but Randon shot did not elude Harrison Boutilier in the Leafs' net. Just seconds later Rendell-Watson made it 4-0 Leafs. The Leafs held a 15-8 advantage in shots in the first and the only other time the Eagles came close was when Noel Thomas Simon let a quick wrist shot go that hit Boutilier’s mask and bounced off.
The Leafs started the second period on the power-play for 1:11 but could not connect. The Eagles' Daymon Johnson pulled his team to within three goals before Chambers and Dean Vial both scored for the Leafs. Simon then managed the Eagles' second goal before Rendell-Watson scored his third of the evening and ninth of the season to give the Leafs a 7-3 lead after forty minutes.
The Leafs scored three more in the third with Chambers adding his third and singles going to Stuart Kennie and Nathan Clarke. Some animosity broke out in the third with 149 of the game’s 194 penalty minutes being handed out, slowing the game down considerably. In all, there were seven minors, five majors, 6 misconducts and 5 game misconducts handed out by officials.
The Leafs are going into Sackville Monday October 22nd hoping to pick up an additional two points as they put their 4-2-0 record up against the 7-2-0 Blazers.
