Leafs no difficulty with Blues in season-opening game

Burghardt - 5 point night as Leafs score three short-handed goals

Valley Maple Leafs 10    Cumberland County Blues 3 -

Special teams failed the Cumberland County Blues miserably in their 2018-2019 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League regular season opener in Springhill as the Blues in losing 10-3 to the Valley Maple Leafs allowed the Leafs three-short handed goals and a power-play marker.  The Leafs scored four times each in the opening two periods and finished their scoring off with two more in the final period.  Cody Burghardt as part of his five point night scored one of his team's three-shorthanded goals to give the Leafs a 3-1 lead before then scoring near the end of the first period for the Leafs fourth and final goal of the opening frame. Ethan-Rendell Watson scored the Leafs first short-handed goal in the first and followed it up with another short-handed goal in the second period to put the Leafs ahead 6-1.  The power-play goal came from Taylor Brown who knotted the game at 1-1 after Chad Miller opened the game’s scoring for Cumberland.  Following Watson’s second short-handed goal, the Blues pulled to within four goals.  Isaac Bridge and Patrick Halpin scored before the second period ended for an 8-2 Leafs lead.  The Blues scored to make it 8-3 in the third but only 11 seconds later John Chambers gave the Leafs a six goal advantage before Isaac Bridge’s goal finished the game’s scoring.  Besides Burghardt’s 2 goals, he also set-up three other Leaf goals.  The Leafs next game will see them remain on the road with a game in East Hants on the 28 at 7:30 p.m.
